How To Make the Most of Your Internship

By Ashley Paskill on February 4, 2018

Internships are an excellent way to get job experience in your field and to improve your resume. Many employers look for candidates with relevant internship experience and having an internship can even lead to a job upon successful completion. At the very least, you gain insight as to what you really want in your career. Follow these tips to make sure you make the most of your time as an intern and be as successful as possible.

1. Communicate with your supervisor.

Communication is the key to success in any company, but it is super important when it comes to being an intern. Communicating with your supervisor about tasks and policies is crucial to make sure you do not a silly mistake. Also, if you are not getting what you want out of the internship, complete your given tasks and see if there are other things you can do as well. Do not be afraid to ask questions, but make sure they are questions that you did attempt to answer yourself first.

2. Dress appropriately.

Dressing appropriately is crucial for maintaining a professional image. Before your first day, ask your supervisor what the dress code is. If you get a chance to go into the office before your first official day, take a cue from those in the office and confirm with your supervisor. Some internships may be business casual while others require more formal attire. When in doubt, it is better to be more formally dressed. Do not show up in sweats, ever.

3. Stay organized.

Unless you have a summer internship, it is likely that you will be juggling school, a job, and an internship all at once. This can be overwhelming. Keep a planner and a notebook. In your notebook, keep track of everything you have done and accomplished at your internship. In your planner, write out deadlines, due dates, and anything else you have going on. Make sure you allot time for school, your internship, homework, your work shifts, and relaxation.

4. Connect with others in your company other than your supervisor.

While it is important to be in open communication with your supervisor, connecting with others in the company can help you make new connections in your dream field. If you finish everything for your supervisor, ask if you can help others with things they are working on. This gives you an opportunity to do more and get more experience as well as show that you are willing to do more than what you initially signed up for.
